We are researchers at the University of Rochester who are studying the development of allergies in babies.  The purpose of this study is to find out if eating or avoiding peanuts and eggs during pregnancy will affect your baby's sensitivity or tolerance to those foods. We hope this study will help us to better understand how babies at high risk for developing food allergies are impacted.  We will also look at the effects of eating or avoiding peanuts and eggs while breastfeeding your baby.

We are looking for pregnant women in their first or second trimester who are willing to eat or avoid peanuts and eggs. Your participation in this study would start at 27-week gestation and end when your baby is one year old.

If you decide to join this study, you will be assigned to one of two groups, either to eat or avoid peanuts and eggs during your pregnancy and in the four months after your baby is born. Your group will be assigned randomly with a computer program, like flipping a coin.  You will not get to choose.  We will mail all the supplies you need to collect some samples for us (breast milk, house dust, stool and baby saliva) to your home. You'll store these samples in your home freezer for a bit and then we'll help you mail them back to us.  We will also ask for one or two samples of blood from you and your baby to help detect allergies to peanut and/or egg.

This pre-screening survey will ask you a few questions to see if you are eligible to participate in the ESCAPE study. Completing this screening survey does NOT obligate you to participate. If your answers show that you might qualify, we will contact you to ask some additional questions and explain the study further.

There may be no direct benefit to you for completing the pre-screening survey. Completing the pre-screening survey is voluntary. You may skip any questions or quit the survey at any time. Your responses to the survey are kept confidential to the extent allowed by law. This survey is on the University of Rochester web-based tool called REDCap. REDCap has features to help keep your information secure. However, as with anything involving the Internet, we can never guarantee the complete confidentiality of the information.

The survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete. By clicking the button below you are indicating that you understand the information and agree to begin the pre-screening survey.

Thank you so much for your interest in helping us learn more about infant allergies!
